Otoplasty (Ear Reshaping)
Protruding or otherwise abnormally shaped ears can subject a person to significant distress due to inconsiderate remarks or teasing about the look of the ears. The objective of otoplasty is to reshape the cartilaginous skeleton of the ear so that it will have a normal position and attract little attention. Because each ear is somewhat different from every other ear, the operative procedure must be individually tailored and varies in its technique and expectations according to the circumstances leading to the surgery. Otoplasty is a challenging, precision-requiring surgery not performed by all plastic surgeons. However, working with cartilage and the challenging three dimensional design details of individual ears has become Dr. Jones’s masterpiece of work. Double board certified in both plastic surgery and ENT, and over 25 years of performing otoplasties, he has perfected his approach to building and reconstructing beautiful ears that look balanced with the face. Dr. Jones’s skill and talent are evident in his results.
Dr. Jones performs otoplasty on children as early as at five years of age—before peer pressure occurs and once most of the cartilaginous growth has been accomplished—and on adults, resulting in increased self-esteem and confidence. Ear reshaping surgery is effective and long lasting for making the ears smaller, not stick out from the head, and to help the ears look more proportionate to the rest of the face.
The procedure is usually done under local anesthesia as an outpatient for adults and under general anesthesia for children. The surgery takes one to two hours, sometimes more. The incision is made behind the ear and is not visible once healed. Following surgery, Dr. Jones places a head wrap to protect the new ear.
Dr. Jones will discuss your concerns with you and explain the details of otoplasty cosmetic surgery. He will take the time to understand the outcome that you want and work with you to determine a surgical plan that best suits your needs to create the results you desire.
