Cosmetic Surgery for Scars in Atlanta GA
Cuts, abrasions, and deformities from car accidents, dog bites, and other trauma are usually covered by insurance. Though no scar can be completely removed, Dr. Mark Mitchell Jones can improve the appearance of a scar. His techniques for scar excision and improvement include using certain injectable medications and surgical correction. Surgical correction can range from the use of grafts or flaps of skin to the use of Z-plasty and other surgical procedures.
A skin graft is a piece of healthy skin taken from one area of the body, the “donor site,” and used to cover another area. A skin flap is a section of living tissue carrying its own blood supply. It is also moved from one area of the body to another. Use of skin grafts and flaps is determined based on the extent of the trauma. This kind of reconstructive surgery can restore both the form and the function to areas of the body that have lost skin, fat, muscle movement, and/or skeletal support.
Z-plasty, as the name implies, involves several small zigzagging incisions to hide a scar that crosses skin tension lines. Simple redirection of the central limb into these lines can provide adequate camouflage. The redistribution of tension on the wound provided by Z-plasty can be very helpful when dealing with a contracted scar or with a scar near visible parts of the body where small amounts of tissue need to be moved with as little distortion as possible, such as near eyes and lips. In addition, multiple Z-plasties can break up a larger scar into smaller units, thus making the scar less noticeable.
Whether used alone or in conjunction with other scar-camouflage techniques, Z-plasty is a versatile maneuver that, when mastered, provides aesthetically pleasing results.
